I'm from Germany but I'm not a fan of most of the German movie productions. I guess this movie is yet another dragging and boring one, the characters are rather wooden and the first hour is plain awful.

I don't understand why Germans don't get that the pacing is everything, especially when it comes to a thriller. I was actually about to stop watching but I wanted to know the outcome.

Hence, I have to say that the idea was good but the execution was lacking a convincing plot and convincing and well-rounded characters.

I do hope someone will write a truly good book on this topic - because the fact that people go missing on a moving town with no law enforcement could indeed make for an interesting lead.

Nov 01, Twinslovebooks2 rated it liked it. There were some twists, I wasn't expecting Mar 14, Ulla rated it it was amazing. Those who love to go on cruises should rethink if they really want to read this book.

It plays with all the fears most of us have - especially the feeling of being helpless. The end is fabulous! I was very impressed! My original Passenger 23 audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Ship owners have a considerable interest in keeping these disappearances under wraps and tend to describe those that come to light as suicides, whether there is evidence of a suicide or not.

Five years ago, undercover detective Martin Schwartz lost his wife and son to such a disappearance on My original Passenger 23 audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Five years ago, undercover detective Martin Schwartz lost his wife and son to such a disappearance on board a cruise ship.

Now a shell of a man with nothing to loose, he agrees to meet a wacky elderly woman on board that same ship.

She maintains there is something far more sinister going on as children and their mothers have gone missing regularly over the years.

As Schwartz starts to look into this mystery, one of the missing children reappears on board the ship. The book like most of his should come with a warning.

Fitzek likes to shock, and the gruesome details and disturbing themes will not appeal to everyone.

Passenger 23 deals with the sexual abuse of children and is rather hard hitting in its description of physical acts of violence and sexual abuse.

There are intermittent sound effects throughout and music in between chapters. The music IMHO was trashy. It reminded me of very old films where the music is supposed to create suspense.

Narration was very good. The voice artist narrating the story was a little too rigid and formal, but the narrators portraying the main characters brought life to the story.

Audiobook provided for review by the audiobookreviewer. This is my first book by Sebastian Fitzek and I will be looking for more by this author.

Very good thriller with clever and surprising twists all the way to the very end that moment when you think you have pretty much all the answers and there is still one hour of the recording left!

I have been reading too many American thrillers recently and this book made me realise how many of them follow the same formulaic pattern.

It is possible that German thrillers have their own repetitive formulae w This is my first book by Sebastian Fitzek and I will be looking for more by this author.

It is possible that German thrillers have their own repetitive formulae which I may eventually discover. But not today.

Passenger 23 is a darker story in the same way some European movies are darker, touching on subjects that many would find uneasy and not every plot line will have a happy ending.

Four solid stars, only because I give five to books I know I will read again and again. It's past 4AM right now, so I'm gonna write this after I get some proper sleep.

Among all of Fitzek's books that I've read so far , this one is closer in essence to Noah than Die Therapie and the likes which deal more about the human psyche and how it can screw you over.

There's something very Fitzek about it, but the atmosphere is different, less Although I guess there's something a bit claustrophobic about being stuck on a cruise ship One thing I've always loved about Fitzek's books is how he tells you his story in very short chapters alternating POVs, each ending with some kind of cliffhanger which only leads you to keep turning page after page.

This one doesn't fail. I am, however, willing to admit that sometimes, I'd like for the two chapters of that one character to be together instead of being separated by 3 chapters of that one other character just for the sake of suspense.

But it's Fitzek's narrative style, and you just have to get used to it. And, in any case, since the chapters are short, it's not like you have to wait for 3 hours before getting the outcome of these cliffhangers.

Then, there's the fact that whenever you think you're done with it, there's actually a new plot twist hanging on the very next page.

And when 50 pages before the end of the book, it felt like the end of this wrapping up, obviously, you know there's more to it than it seemed I mean, Fitzek doesn't write 50 pages-long epilogues.

And that's where I think this book is brilliant because I just It started as what looked just like another random serial killer story, but then delved into a much deeper and meaningful story, along with some extra gifts.

To be quite honest, at one point, I kinda thought the "doctor" mentioned in the prologue was Elina aka.

Thinking about this "passenger 23" thing view spoiler [aka. Even if, in my case, I don't see the appeal of cruises to begin with.

But, that's besides the point. Like Fitzek said And that makes you wonder what really hides in the deepest corners of these cruises, and if, somehow, everything he tells you couldn't be scarily close to reality.

Finally, the possibly most important side of this book is how it deals with a very serious and very often overlooked issue. Overlooked as in, no one wants to talk about, and those who do are usually shut down on the pretense that it actually doesn't exist?

I can't speak for certain here, but that's the take I got about this from hanging on Twitter where everyone state their opinion a bit too loudly about things they know close to nothing about.

I'm amazed by how Fitzek wrapped this very hard to talk about subject into a beautiful package of a cruise on a luxury boat.

I'm done with my yearly dose of Fitzek. Hopefully, our French editors will keep the pace and keep releasing his books regularly here, which means I'll see you next year on the next one.

Although, I'm seeing on his website that there's at least one of his books yet to be translated to French that has been translated to English, so I might go grab it in a not so distant future Or, hopefully, I might learn German soon enough to be able to get the remaining 4 or 5 books in their original version because I feel like it might take a few more years with more books released in the meantime for them to be translated and released here.

Jul 24, Mars Dorian rated it really liked it. Another compelling and page-turning thriller from Fitzek which I burned through in 24 hours.

It all takes place on a cruise ship where a bunch of diverse people police officer, nurse, author, captain etc.

Since this is a German thriller book, I always expect realistic and serious crime setups, but Fitzek does the opposite: his books are ripe with Japanese anime-grade eccentrics w Another compelling and page-turning thriller from Fitzek which I burned through in 24 hours.

Since this is a German thriller book, I always expect realistic and serious crime setups, but Fitzek does the opposite: his books are ripe with Japanese anime-grade eccentrics who should be confined to mental institutions.

They either fight or have sex with each other, create insane traps or twisted mind games. Where's Fitzek recruiting his characters from?

Arkham Asylum? Also: insane coincidences are so frequent one might think there's a higher force orchestrating every single moment.

But hey, this is fiction. So what. SO freaking what. His prose is consumable like a hot Nutella pancake, so that's a plus.

If you don't expect realism and want a fast-paced thriller with a ridiculous revelation, go ahead and read it. It's a wild ride. I'll keep reading more Fitzek.

The self-destructive protagonist, Martin Schwartz, finds himself re-living the nightmare of his son and wife going overboard when a perpetual cruiser finds new evidence surrounding their disappearance years later.

There's a sense of desperation and a ticking clock on the ship as the time on-board ticks down the liner arriving at New York. This is conveyed well with the cast of characters assembled by Audible and the drama and tension keeps going right to the end.

Sep 07, Panchali Mukherjee rated it it was amazing. This author was first suggested to me by my mother-in-law. She read this book while on a trans-Atlantic cruise.

Since then I have listened to two audiobooks dramas by this author. I really liked Amok Spiel , although in certain places it got a little too dark for me.
